ESTHER 9...
Esther 9 - Victory for the Jews, who defeat their enemies, with the help of King Xerxes.
“Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day, the time came for the king’s command and his decree to be executed. On the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, the opposite occurred, in that the Jews themselves overpowered those who hated them. The Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Xerxes to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could withstand them, because fear of them fell upon all people. And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and all those doing the king’s work, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them. For Mordecai was great in the king’s palace, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for this man Mordecai became increasingly prominent. Thus the Jews defeated all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, with slaughter and destruction, and did what they pleased with those who hated them.”
We have our own enemies to deal with; but with the King of Kings on our side, we have no reason to fear - What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
Verses 11-17 tells us at the king’s invitation, Esther asks for the complete defeat of all the enemies of the Jews.
“On that day the number of those who were killed in Shushan the citadel was brought to the king. And the king said to Queen Esther, “The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the citadel, and the ten sons of Haman. What have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your further request? It shall be done.” Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do again tomorrow according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.” So the king commanded this to be done; the decree was issued in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons. And the Jews who were in Shushan gathered together again on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and killed three hundred men at Shushan; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder. The remainder of the Jews in the king’s provinces gathered together and protected their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of their enemies; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder. This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. And on the fourteenth day of the month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
REMEMBER that Haman & his 10 sons were descendents of the ancient Amalekites (comparing Esther 3:1 and 1 Samuel 15:8-33). God commanded Saul, the son of Kish, to execute the full extend of God’s judgment against the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15:2-3). Samuel failed; but this later descendent of the tribe of Benjamin and a son of Kish named Mordecai (Esther 2:5-6) & Esther completed God’s judgment against the Amalekites.
Verses 18-19 tell us of the creation of The feast of Purim, a GREAT celebration among the Jews of the Persian Empire.
The principle of remembering God’s great deliverance is good; we too often forget His great works. Today, Purim is one of the more popular Jewish feasts, with costumes, games and noise.
The story of Esther also shows us that in the outworking of His plan, God can use the evil of man. God did not make Xerxes drunk, or make him demand that his queen present herself in an immodest way before the lords of the kingdom; yet God allowed this wicked action of man to fulfill a purpose in His greater plan. We find assurance in the truth that no other person, no matter how evil they are, can defeat God’s plan for our life, no matter what they have done to you or will do to you.
